MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Walton Families,

We have reached the end of the first six weeks and progress reports for your child are now available.  We do not distribute paper copies of progress reports but you may download/print your own as needed from StudentVue/ParentVue.  To print a progress report:

Log into ParentVue (preferably not on a phone).
Once you select your student, select “Report Card” from the left-hand column.
On the report card screen, under “Walton High School”, you will see a link that says “Click here to view report card for 1st Six Weeks”.
This link will download a PDF file of your child’s report card.

PSAT - October 12, 2022

We encourage students in 9th, 10th and 11th grades to take the PSAT.   With the University System of Georgia again requiring admissions tests for certain schools, it is good practice for our students, and it provides families feedback about strengths and weaknesses.  Additionally, the 11th grade test is used as the qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarship.  All 10th grade students are automatically registered for the test and the fee will be paid by the state of Georgia.  Students in 9th grade who do not register for the test will be in quiet study hall for the day.

11th grade students who do not take the PSAT and any interested 12th grade student will take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 11:00 a.m.  The test will take approximately three hours.  Military personnel will offer a score interpretation session approximately three weeks after the administration. Register for the ASVAB at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4dada723aaf9cf8-asvab1. Registration deadline is Monday, October 10. If you have any questions you can contact Betsy.Alpert@cobbk12.org.

What will PSAT day look like?

Walton will be using its flexibility to change the schedule for PSAT day.  We believe this will allow for a better testing environment as well as allow our seniors time to work on college applications.

All 12th grade students will have an independent learning day from home to complete post-secondary applications.  Students will not be considered absent as they prepare for this important next step.

Students who are taking the PSAT will be in the testing location until 12:40 p.m.  Please know that students cannot be dismissed until all tests are collected which could delay the 12:40 p.m. dismissal.  At that time, parents may pick their child up from school.  9th grade parents should use the front driveway.  10th and 11th grade parents should pick up from the bus lane.  Any student who stays the rest of the day to take the bus home will have an opportunity to eat lunch and remain in quiet study hall the rest of the day.  If your child gets extended time with college board, you will receive additional information on a dismissal time.

CHARTER RENEWAL:

Since 1998, Walton High School has been designated a conversion charter school.  The charter gives our school autonomy to make decisions to best meet the needs of our students.  At Walton, we utilize the charter flexibility through WEB, flexible scheduling, course offerings, resource purchases, and faculty professional development.  The charter term is 5 years, and this year is a renewal year.  The proposed charter will be posted on the Walton website under “News” on the front page, along with this direct link here (document is located at the bottom of the page under related files).  Part of the charter renewal process is obtaining stakeholder approval and therefore, we need parent votes.  We will have a charter information presentation followed by Q & A.  Meeting times and voting times are listed below:

Parent meeting October 6th in the theater at 7:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.  The meeting will only last 15-20 minutes.

Parent meeting October 7th in the theater at 12:00 p.m.  The meeting will only last 15-20 minutes.

Parent voting will take place on October 6th in the theater from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. and October 7th in the atrium from 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Sincerely,

Richard Tischler

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS

PTSA volunteers do great things to support our faculty, staff, and students.  For events in August and September, we recognize the following committees and chairs and their team of volunteers for their time and effort:

  • Welcome Back Staff Lunch:  Beth O’Neal and Kimberly Alexander welcomed all faculty and staff with a Back to School BBQ.  Hosted right before the year started, it was a great time to reconnect and prepare for a great year ahead.  All staff received a health and hygiene package containing wipes, tissues, and hand sanitizer for the classroom.

  • Freshmen Welcome: Amy Blitzer andMarlene Cohn welcomed our Freshmen to the Walton family at a Freshman football game. We can’t thank these volunteers enough for their creativity and determination to provide a memorable event for our new Raiders!  Check out the pictures below from the game.

  • Community Hospitality:  Anne Cumberledge has been an advocate for Cobb County underprivileged families for many years.  Thank you, Anne, for your efforts to support our local elementary schools through training.  Please e-mail Anne if you would like to join the Community Hospitality team.

  • Membership:  Thank you, Kim Makuch and Jessica Loewy!!!  We are on our way to meeting our PTSA goals, with almost 100% staff participation and over 400 student memberships!  Will you help us to reach our goal of 100% membership?  CLICK HERE TO JOIN! Membership is only $5.00 per person.  Sign up your students too. They are the "S" in PTSA!

  • Newcomer’s Network:  Coming to a school as large as Walton can be intimidating for both students and parents.  Thank you to Janice Winfrey and Natalie Collins for welcoming our new 10th-12th graders.  Special thank you to our student ambassadors for your guidance too!

  • Bars and Letters:  Students who earn a 4.0 or higher for the entire academic school year receive an Academic Letter.  Students who do so in a subsequent year receive an Academic Bar.  Thank you, Michelle Zerbenski and Sima Valvani, for helping the Administration recognize Walton’s top scholars.

  • Copy Crew, Front Office, and Attendance Office Volunteers:  So much of our work happens behind the scenes, providing support to make sure the Walton community is successful.  Many volunteers show up daily to support Walton’s faculty and staff.  Special thanks to Shannon Eiser, Natalie Collins, Melanie May and Cindie Franklin-Katz for coordinating our daily volunteers.  Thank you to those who come in to help each week.  You are appreciated and valued!

Thank you all for supporting Walton’s active and vibrant PTSA.

FRESHMEN WELCOME

On August 25, your PTSA hosted a Freshmen Welcome at the 9th grade football game.  The Class of 2026 came out in full force to celebrate and cheer on their classmates against Hillgrove High.  Students who attended were given a credit at the concession stand and a Walton welcome gift as they departed.

Superman and Supergirl were also in attendance and led the cheering section in learning the Walton High traditional cheers and chants!  They were also given some tips to prepare for the varsity games.

Congratulations on the team win, and the students who stayed to the end cheering them on had a fun evening getting to know their classmates.

*Those not in attendance will receive their welcome gift through homeroom over the next couple of weeks.

WALTON FOOTBALL CORKY KELL

Our Walton Raider Football Team kicked off their season at Mercedes Benz Stadium by participating in The Corky Kell Classic.  The Corky Kell Classic is an annual series of high school football games played in Georgia at the beginning of each Georgia High School Association football season, featuring many of the state's top teams.  The teams play to help raise money for the Corky Kell Scholarship Fund.  Although our Raiders battled hard, they came up a little short with a loss of 44-41 against Mill Creek.  Everyone who attended had a fun time cheering on the team and we look forward to an exciting season.

POWDER PUFF FOOTBALL
WALTON CHEERLEADING

Walton hosted the Raider Cheer Classic this past Saturday, the first cheer competition of the high school season.  Over 20 teams from the area competed including our Varsity and Middle School Junior Raider team.

This event is a huge fundraiser for the Walton cheer program.  A new mascot costume, new spirit uniforms, and an inflatable arch were just a few things we were able to purchase for the program due to funds raised last year.

Congratulations to Emily Cybul from Walton High School on being named to the 2022 5A-7A All-State Team!  #gccaallstate2022
