MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Walton Families,

It is hard to believe it is almost the end of October and we only have 8 weeks left in the semester.  We had a wonderful Homecoming week, and it was great to see a high level of participation in our spirit days.  I would like to thank all the parent volunteers for organizing the homecoming dance.  We had so many students attend the dance - more than half the school!

Over the past few weeks, we have received some excellent news about Walton’s performance on the SAT and ACT.  We continue to lead the way in Cobb and our state with the Class of 2022 averaging 1255 on the SAT and 27 on the ACT.  We also recently recognized 19 National Merit Semifinalists in the Class of 2023.  It speaks to the quality of curriculum and instruction delivered by our teachers and the dedication of our students.

AP (Advanced Placement) Exam Payment Deadline for fall one-semester and year-long AP course exams is quickly approaching on November 4th. Please contact PAMELA.LAVANGIE@cobbk12.org if you have any questions.

To ensure student safety, we must address morning drop off.  Students should be dropped off as close to the front entrance as possible.  Please leave all other lanes open in front of the school to help with traffic flow.   ALWAYS pull up as far as you can, thus ensuring quick movement of cars through the carpool lanes.  Students should be prepared to exit your car close to the front of the school and not anywhere else on campus.  Please also remember that the carpool lanes are one way only.

IMPORTANT DATES:

10/31- Halloween at Walton.  All students are encouraged to dress up at school.  Please be on the lookout for information about types of costumes allowed and other rules from Dr. Jones.  If you have specific questions, please contact Christopher.Jones@cobbk12.org.

11/1- Junior Advisement starts November 1st and goes on for 3 weeks. https://www.waltonhighcounseling.com/jradvisement

11/8- Teacher workday/Student Holiday

Please continue to engage and stay informed through our communications in the weekly e-blast, CTLS Parent and social media.

Sincerely,

Richard Tischler

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-PRESIDENTS

HAPPY FALL, WALTON FAMILIES.

We have had a busy month.

We would like to thank our Hearing and Vision amazing duo, Lisa Flagel and Wynne Fitzpatrick, and their team of volunteers for the coordination of testing 750 Sophomore students' hearing and vision, and retesting another 150+ at a follow-up check.  These two ladies really exemplify commitment to the Walton Raider community.

A big shout out goes to Valerie Smith and Natalie Collins for organizing and providing a successful teacher PSAT day breakfast.  We love to show appreciation to our teachers throughout the year.

Thank you to Susan Thrash from our Community Outreach Committee. Susan has led the team of 150+ students to serve underprivileged elementary students and the elderly in our community for years.  We appreciate Susan and the student leaders' efforts as they lead these teams!

Homecoming Week at Walton was a success!  So many different groups work tirelessly to bring the fun to our students and our community.  Student Government plans the theme and events for the week; the cheerleaders organize the parade; the Foundation’s Student Leadership Council orchestrates the dance.  Thank you to all of you who helped with Homecoming.  It means so much to have these traditions!

Thanks to Ginny Kirkland from our Legislative Affairs Committee for keeping us informed of topics on the midterm ballots and how to get more information.  We appreciate you!

Margaret McAskill and Sandy Sweeney did a wonderful job organizing the Raider Pride Award Ceremony.  Thank you!

Melissa Radtke is doing a great job chairing the Reflections committee this season.  With so many entries from students, we’re sure to have a successful Reflections program again this fall.  Thanks Melissa for all your organization and time!

PTSA’s Senior Breakfast Committee planned an amazing day of fun for our seniors as well.  A special thank you to Dara Onori, Rachel Ongara, Jane Gower Turner and Kimberly Alexander for making the breakfast so special!

Finally, we appreciate Coach Kay and her students for making the informative Red Ribbon Week Bulletin Boards outside of the cafeteria.

Thank you all for supporting your PTSA!

Melanie May and Caroline Whaley, PTSA Co-Presidents

FOUNDATION NEWS
STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

With 1,400 students in attendance, Walton’s “A Trip Down Sunset Boulevard” Homecoming dance can be deemed a success!  All who attended looked incredible and embodied the spirit of the night.  This Homecoming dance was the first dance hosted in the main gymnasium since the new building opened 5 years ago, which provided the necessary space for such an event.  With such a beautiful clear night, the aerial search lights were enjoyed by those in attendance and seen throughout the community.  From the outdoor 40 ft Hollywood sign and the indoor 25 ft photo wall, there were plenty of opportunities for great photos.  We engaged House of Music Productions to help create an atmosphere worthy of a concert experience with state of the art visual and lighting effects.  And a huge thanks to DJ Leo for keeping the students jamming and entertained all night long.

We are grateful for the support of Administration, school police officers, Staff and custodians. A huge shout out to the custodians who turned around the gym in record time after a late afternoon volleyball game. We couldn’t have done it without you! The Walton community was amazing providing refreshments for all students in attendance and we’re so appreciative of the parents who took time to help chaperone the event.

The Student Leadership Council is honored to be able to put on such an event for the Walton students.  We are already looking forward to next year and how we can make it bigger and better!

NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDATION

Before fall break, Mr. Tischler received notification that 48 Walton seniors received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program.  These Commended Students are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying 2021 PSAT used for program entry.  Although only National Merit semifinalists are able to continue in the competition for Merit Scholarship awards, these commended students have made Walton very proud.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST

And big Congratulations to Senior Gavin Du who was selected to be a Semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Semifinalists are the highest scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 0.5 percent of Georgia's senior students.  Finalists will be announced in February.  Best of Luck!!

Here are the Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

RED RIBBON WEEK

Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world.  With the focus to help raise awareness of the killing and destruction caused by drugs in America, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated each year at schools to continue to educate students regarding drug awareness.  This year's theme, Celebrate Life Live Drug Free, is a reminder to make wise choices each day to ensure that you are the best you can be.  A huge Thank You to Coach Kay and her Health Classes that took the challenge to create an educational bulletin board for all students to see and learn from.  Working in the classroom and together, the finished product presents important information about the impact of drugs and alcohol with the reminder to Celebrate Life and Live Drug Free.

SENIOR BREAKFAST

On Friday, October 21, your PTSA provided Chick-fil-A biscuits, Smoothie King smoothies, donuts, fruit, juice and granola bars to the senior class.  There were raffle tickets for prizes followed by a game of Price is Right in the theatre where more prizes were given.  Thank you to all of our volunteers for making this event possible and to everyone who donated gifts and prizes for our seniors.  Congratulations to the Class of 2023!
