MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Walton Families,

It is hard to believe this is the final week of the first semester.  We hope that students continued to work hard in their classes and had successful final exams.  Please remember that we offer a variety of extra help sessions for students.

If you have driven by the construction site across the street from the school lately, you have probably noticed the considerable progress that has been made in the last few weeks. The new tennis courts are nearly complete and will be ready for our tennis teams to welcome opponents back to campus for their spring season.  In addition, the parking lot and landscaping on that section of the property will be completed by then.

Meanwhile, the baseball field is also beginning to take shape.  We should see buildings coming out of the ground by mid-winter, grass planted by early spring, and the complex completed by July of next year.  That will complete the major construction projects on our campus that started eight long years ago and bring all of the activities that are normally located on campus back home again.

The fall sports have completed their seasons, and the Raiders experienced a lot of success.  In the regular season, volleyball and boys and girls cross country won region championships.  In the state playoffs, volleyball made the semifinals, girls cross country was 4th, competition cheer was 8th, boys cross country was 17th, and fastpitch softball and flag football both made it to the first round.

In addition, football was the region runner-up and reached the quarterfinals of the state playoffs after beating South Forsyth in the first round and Buford in the second round.  At the time, Buford was ranked #1 in the state and #2 in the nation and Walton won 42-35.  Winter sports (basketball, wrestling, swim & dive, and precision air rifle) have also gotten started, so there are plenty of opportunities to get out and support your Raiders!

Walton Band Program was just named a Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence for the Southern Division of the National Band Association!  Walton was one of only four high school bands in the country to be selected as a division winner.  Congratulations to all of our amazing students.

On December 9th, the Walton Foundation and PTSA hosted the Walton Faculty and Staff to a catered lunch.  We greatly appreciate the Walton Foundation for joining us in this event and helping make it possible.  Thank you to Janice Winfrey and Natalie Collins who planned this luncheon for over 200.  In addition, we thank Sarah-Kate Bozza and Nazanin Moradimehr for the beautiful table arrangements they created.  And of course we can’t forget the amazing parents that baked and provided homemade desserts, or gave of their time to set up and serve at this event.  The Walton Chorus and Orchestra provided entertainment through out the day, and it was a festive event for all.

As we prepare for the holidays, vacations, final exams, and everything else that comes with the end of the first semester, our hope for each of you is that you will enjoy this time off and recharge for a successful 2023.  We are thankful for each and every one of YOU reading this now!  Your membership allows us to accomplish our goals.  We wish you all a safe, healthy, and restful Holiday season.

In thanks,

Melanie May and Caroline Whaley, PTSA Co-Presidents

TEACHER HOLIDAY LUNCH

On December 9, your PTSA and the Walton Foundation hosted a holiday luncheon for teachers and staff.  Mediterranean Grill catered the event and parents donated holiday treats.  Both Walton Orchestra and Walton Chorus performed so the teachers had live entertainment.  Below are a few pictures from the event.

WALTON ROBOTICS

Walton Robotics was recently featured in the Marietta Daily Journal and the Cobb County Schools website.  Here is the story:

As members of Walton High School’s award-winning robotics team, Walton students have impacted students throughout their community and as far away as Brazil.

The Walton Robotics team’s mascot, Flat Walt, has popped up worldwide and been spotted on all seven continents.  In addition to winning regional, state, national, and international awards, one of their robots will soon debut on the big screen and add movie credits to the team’s list of accomplishments.

Now, the Walton students’ legacy of building award-winning robots while coordinating extensive community outreach will continue inside a new spacious robotics center.  The team’s new home, which is funded by Ed-SPLOST, will boost its engineering capabilities and ability to impact students throughout Cobb and beyond.

The Walton Robotics team recently welcomed the community to tour their new facility, see a demonstration of one of their award-winning robots in action, and celebrate with them during the facility’s official ribbon cutting.

“We’re in a very fortunate position in East Cobb, which is a robotics hub. We like to give back, and that’s our mission. We are also about giving back to our community. We go to Title I schools, and we take our outreach activities there,” explained Anish, a Walton senior and robotics team veteran.

Anish and his robotics teammates take teambuilding exercises and activities to local elementary schools to help spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  They visited schools like Powers Ferry Elementary School, Fair Oaks Elementary School, East Valley Elementary School, and Timber Ridge Elementary School.

“We’re not just about building a robot,” added Anish, who dedicates about 50 hours per week to the team. “We also like to tell our team story, saying, ‘we built this robot. Yes, it’s amazing. We’re a championship robot, but we also give back to our community, and that’s what’s more important to us.’”

Walton launched its robotics team, FIRST Team 2974, in 2008, and since then, their community service hours have piled up year after year.

In just the month of October, the Walton Robotics team members hosted a Rocket Adventure Camp to teach Cobb middle school students the basics of rocket science, engineering, and problem-solving.  They also welcomed middle school girls to a special activity-packed event to encourage them to explore the world of STEM.

Over the summer, the Walton students hosted robotics camps for Cobb elementary and middle school students.

During the school year, Walton Robotics leads and mentors two teams of middle school students from Dickerson Middle School and Dodgen Middle School.

In addition to their community impact, Walton Robotics impacts the student participants, who dedicate an average of 15-20 hours each week to the team.

“My personal goal when I joined the team was to be a really, really good programmer because I came in with a lot of program knowledge. I used to do a lot of programming in middle school. When I joined the team, that kind of really transformed, and I saw so many other fields. It kind of helped my spark for engineering after I saw the build team working on all their mechanisms and everything. I definitely am pursuing engineering as my major in college, more specifically aerospace engineering,” explained Anish.

Walton senior Oscar is also using his experience on the robotics team to prepare for college and his future career.

“I’m applying for electrical engineering and computer science. That has really been driven by robotics because I’m not in the STEM program at school, but here I really discovered a passion for programming. I’ve discovered a passion for STEM, and I wouldn’t have gotten that experience if I wasn’t involved in robotics,” Oscar said.

With a wide variety of positions available beyond programming, their experience on the team improves more than just their engineering skills.

“I worked with the presentation team, which helped me with my public speaking because I used to be very shy. I’d be like this quiet programmer that sat in the corner and just kind of work, work, work. After working with the presentation [team], they’ve been able to help me build my confidence and also help me build my speaking voice,” Anish revealed.

Teammate Julia shares Anish’s praise of how the robotics team has impacted her and prepared her for life after high school.

“It’s made me find my purpose. If you had talked to me three years ago, I probably wouldn’t have been talking to you because I’m very nervous. [The team] helped me develop my professional skills more. I’ve done a lot of outreach. It made me find that I love helping people, helping others find what they want to do,” said the Walton junior, who now helps coordinate the two middle school robotics teams.

The Walton students recognize how the community’s support, including constructing the school’s new Ed-SPLOST funded robotics center, will help advance the team’s mission.

“Having this facility has given us the ability to cut out the middle of transporting and having the kids come here and work with us,” Julia said. “They get to see our build site. We have access to our mentors here. We’re close to our school, so we can come here often.”

Thanks to the new facility, the Walton team can stay together in one location and still have room for the students from the middle school robotics teams.

“We couldn’t have done what we have done without what you guys have given us,” Oscar declared. “We would be unable to give back to our community as efficiently as we have. Because of what we have, we’re able to get out more. We’re really grateful for what you guys have offered.”

NEWS FROM THE ART DEPARTMENT
REFLECTIONS

Reflections is a national PTA program that provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life.

Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme.  Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.  This year's theme was "I Will Change the World By."

Student winners from the local level have the opportunity to move up through their district, region, council and state PTA programs to the national level.  National Reflections winners are announced in May and celebrated throughout the following year.  Please visit the PTA Reflections page for information about and artwork from our national winners.

WALTON BAND

On Saturday, November 5, the Raider Band gave an EXTRAORDINARY performance at the Milton High School White Columns Invitational.  Competing against over twenty other bands, the Marching Raiders won highest music, visual, and general effect in Open Class, were named Open Class Champions, were awarded Overall Best Woodwinds and the Randal Coleman Award for Music Excellence (given for the highest music score of the evening), and were named Gold Division Grand Champions with a score of 97.8!

Additionally, our Raider Band did a fantastic job at our two Bands of America regional competitions, in which we competed against bands from all over the contry.  At the BOA Winston-Salem, NC Regional, we received third place in finals while also receiving the High Visual award.  At the BOA Jacksonville, AL finals, we received ninth place in finals.

Walton Band recently had Dr. Scott Tobias with us from West Virginia University working with our Wind Symphony.  Dr. Tobias is also the Past-President of the National Band Association and currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the NBA.

Dr. Tobias was able to share with the students that the Walton Band Program was just named a Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence for the Southern Division of the National Band Association!  Walton was one of only four high school bands in the country to be selected as a division winner.

The division winners will now move on to another selection committee which will determine the National Blue Ribbon Program of Excellence, which will be announced in December at the Midwest Conference in Chicago.

The Walton Orchestra program is off to a great start to the year.  There are just shy of 400 orchestra students in 6 orchestra classes---there is a place for every level of player.  The orchestras completed two concerts earlier in the semester and recently held two more concerts to end the fall 2022 semester.

The first concert was a holiday gala on Thursday, December 1 in the Walton Theater featuring Philharmonia with Walton Chorus.  The theme was "Walking in a Walton Wonderland."  Hopefully, it got you in the mood for the holiday season!  There was also a holiday art gallery by the National Art Honor Society in the lobby accompanied by small ensembles from Walton Band too.

The second concert was the send-off concert for Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, December 11 in the Walton Theater.  Walton Orchestra has been accepted for a record-breaking eighth time to the international Midwest Clinic.  This is the equivalent of a national championship for orchestra!  The orchestra was scheduled to perform in 2021, but COVID grounded the ensemble at home.  After the heartbreak of the cancellation, our students were determined to reapply and were accepted again.  Music to be performed includes compositions by Eric Whitacre, Antonin DvoÅ™ák, Franz Schubert, Jennifer Higdon, and more.  A reception will follow the concert in the theater lobby.

Please visit our website: www.waltonorchestra.org for more upcoming events.  Follow us on social media @WaltonOrch on Instagram and Walton High School Orchestra on Facebook.

Graduation will be held on May 24, 2023 at Kennesaw State University at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Seniors and Parents,

It is hard to believe that we have made it to the end of the first semester.  I hope your finals are going well and I am sure you are ready for the winter break.  As the second semester approaches we will begin preparing for graduation.  Upon returning you will be completing the senior graduation form in your ELA classes.  For those of you who do not take an ELA class on campus or that are absent this day I will be contacting you individually to complete the form.  The completion of this form is important as this is the information we will use for ordering your diploma.  Your teacher will walk you through the steps on how to complete the form.

In case you missed the announcement, our graduation will be Wednesday, May 24th at 7:30 p.m. at KSU.  The district will be utilizing a new online process for requesting tickets for graduation.  Ticket allotments will be based on demand from each school.  This process is designed to get more tickets to those who need them.  In the past, all students were given 4 tickets, and then extra tickets were given in a lottery style.  Utilizing the new system families will be able to request a unique amount of tickets and these tickets will be distributed based on availability.  Tickets will be allotted based on availability and requests.  More information will be shared with students and parents when available.

I look forward to an exciting spring and celebrating with all of you.  I hope that you have a restful break.  As always if you need anything please let me know.

Dr. Milton
